F.L.U.D.D.

10:15 AM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

When I made something that I think is worthy of being showed off, I often show it off too much in my opinion. There are up to five places I (have to) show my stuff - Youtube, one or two threads on SMW Central, my German SMW hacking board, and of course this blog. I must seem pretty attention-hungry, don't I? And when I get all those comments in all these places, I often feel like I got too much attention that I actually don't deserve. On the other hand, I don't want to keep all my projects to myself, and I don't want to keep any of the places I post this less up-to-date than the others.

Just wanted to get that off my chest. Now I just have to post this on Youtube, SMWC etc. ... :P

Anyway, here's what I want/have to show you guys, in case you haven't seen it yet.

Cutscene Test

9:50 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

Not much interesting stuff to show today. I do have one video, however:

This shows what you can do with Romi's almost-still-new "Variable Width Font" Cutscene Tool. Well, actually it only shows half of what's possible with this tool. If you haven't tried it out for yourself yet, I recommend doing so as fast as possible. You won't regret it! :D

New Channel active

7:35 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

Mostly just a filler post to keep this blog active.

As you may know, my new Youtube channel "WhiteYoshiEgg" has become active now. I've already uploaded two new videos - might as well show one here:

That's it, actually. If you absolutely want to hear uninteresting stuff: I'm currently trying to port "Bob-Omb Battlefield" from Super Mario 64. Seeing how much my previous porting attempts sucked, you shouldn't expect much from it though. Oh, and I'm still working on the 4th level of A Strange Mission. Yeah, progress has been pretty slow lately - my lack of level design inspiration and custom blocks refusing to work right really decreased my motivation. I was even about to cancel the hack completely, but I recently got a new idea for a level, which I'm really looking forward to making. It doesn't require much ASM, but that doesn't make it less cool in my opinion.

Now that's really it. See ya later.

C3 stuff

Excuse the recent lack of updates... :/

Anyway, SMW C3 (SMW Central Creativity Convention) has started over at SMWC, and I've prepared a few things for it.
First, I've released "The Coin Hunt", which you blog readers have hopefully heard of. I'm too lazy/busy to show screenshots right now - instead, I'll link you to the hack's C3 thread.

LINK

The second project is some kind of Trailer for Not-So-Brutal Mario (which is now officially called A Strange Mission).

Be sure to coment on it in the C3 thread as well! Link.

That's all for now - I plan on making one more thing for C3, but I'm not finished with it yet. Expect it tomorrow or something.

Custom Block: Screen-Scrolling Doors v2

9:03 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

Another short post that only shows a video and copies the description... Oh well, since this blog's called "SMW hacking in an eggshell" (which is supposed to be a wordplay with "in a nutshell"), it's okay to keep the posts short, I guess.

Anyway...

Description:
I decided to start working on my "Screen Scrolling Doors" again, and it turned out a LOT better than before. Now the screen actually scrolls, Mario disappears while scrolling, and there are no known bugs (so far).
Maybe, just maybe, I will release this, but it consists of 4 different blocks, whcih have to be inserted multiple times to give them different GFX per tile (like the ledge edges and the dirt, which are actually the same block). Also, I haven't made a left-scrolling door yet, but that will probably take up just as much block space...

"A very down-to-earth level" + Overworld Download

4:56 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

I don't feel like describing all this again, so I'll just post the video and copy the deciption from Youtube.

I felt like making some cool ASM stuff again (Yeah, others who are more experienced with ASM probably won't find this as cool, but still). I suddenly had the idea of limiting the amount of Mario's jumps per level, and felt like showing you the result. There are some minor bugs though (Jump sound still plays when you're not able to jump), but I don't think I can fix that. Also, notice the jump counter in the status bar - It took a LOT of time to get this to look right, and I had to move most other counters around to have enough space for it. (Actually, I wanted it to show the number of jumps you have left instead of the number of jumps you already made, but I got a bunch of errors everytime I tried to do that... Oh well.
I might also make an entire (yet short) hack full of ASM hacks if I have enough ideas/ASM skills.

Also, I finished my overworld and submaps for the contest at SMWC quite some time ago. Here's the link. (As I said, I'm not quite satisfied with it, but anyway.)

Level Design Challenge - Red Wood Ruins

4:26 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, No Comment

Wow, I haven't posted anxthing in quite a while... About time for an update, I guess. Fortunately I have done something SMW related in the meantime.
Know about the Level Design Contest at SMWC? I'm participating in it. I've already finished my level, called "Red Wood Ruins". Here's the video:

Comments would be appreciated. ;) Oh, and here's the download link.
Also, I'm trying to participate in both of SMWC's overworld contests (A main OW and six submaps). It's not as fun as making a level, so I'm not sure if I'll finish them in time.

Pokey's Adventure

9:20 PM, Posted by WhiteYoshiEgg, One Comment

This post will introduce my SMW hack, which is called "Pokey's Adventure" - For those of you who don't know it.
It's a hack I started more than one year ago, after my firt hack was rejected from SMWC. As the name implies, the main character is not Mario, but Pokey!
The story is pretty generic: Bowser has taken over Pokey's homeland and built up a new army. But to see if they're good enough to possibly defeat Mario, he lets Pokey "test" it. He kidnaps Pokey's brothers and holds them captive in his 7 towers that are scattered around the land. Now it's up to Pokey to rescue is brothers and to banish Bowser from his homeland!
Well, that was the best I could come up with. If you have a better storyline (that doesn't involve changing the plot completely), feel free to tell me.
I already released a 1 world demo, which you can download here. I'm currently working on demo 2, and about half of it is finished.
To make up for the wall of boring text, here's the newest video, uploaded just a few minutes ago:

Copied from the description:
A video of world 2-4 in my SMW hack, Pokey's Adventure. (Yes, the outside part and the boss battle are exact copies of parts in my custom level "Frozen Mansion", which is avaiable on Youtube as well. Also, I know the music in the outside part should be ghost house music... I just forgot to change it before recording. It's fixed by now.

Enjoy!
